Structural Design:

The silo was built around 1970, and it is functioning till present days. An overall repair was ineluctable because of the extensive corrosion and carbonisation of the outer surface of the silo. Roughly 30% of the concrete was severely damaged, and the reinforcement was exposed to environmental effects.
Checking the whole structure, in a part of the silo, the load-bearing capacity cannot be verified according to Eurocode standard. After the necessary investigations and design calculations, structural detail drawings were made to save and repair the silo.
The challenging part in the development of a 3D structural model was the unique loading of the silo wall and the verification of the strengthened walls.
The silo was strengthened by 8 cm shotcrete increasing the reinforcement and the effective thickness of the concrete.
During the construction, a special hanging platform was applied with additional vertical transportation lines for the reinforcement and chipped concrete.
